Executive Summary

In October 2026, attackers hit four platforms that store customers’ keys to AI services. They were Fireworks AI, OpenCode, Railway and Zeabur. The goal appears to have been stealing AI provider API keys. This matters for anyone buying API security tools, because many tools were built to find weak APIs, not to watch for stolen keys in use.

Key findings

  • Railway said about 100,000 workspaces (at most 1.85%) had encrypted environment variables potentially decrypted (Railway, Oct 21–22, 2026).

  • OpenCode said 1.4% of Console users were affected (OpenCode, Oct 17, 2026).

  • 64% of secrets confirmed valid in 2022 were still usable four years later (GitGuardian, Mar 17, 2026).

  • Only 23% of enterprises with full API inventories know which APIs expose sensitive data, down from 40% in 2022 (Akamai, Apr 28, 2026).

Results

  • Top-scoring tool: Salt Security, with a provisional score of 81 out of 100. Akamai API Security (80) and Traceable (79) are close behind.

  • Sponsor entry: MSSP Security is a vendor-neutral consulting firm for managed security service providers. It is not scored as a tool. It is the best choice in this report for one use case: an MSSP that must pick, audit or rebuild its security stack without vendor ties.

  • Scores are close. The top three tools are within two points of each other. Buyers should test them before choosing.

Methodology

Sutton Hills Research Partners scored each tool on eight criteria. The total is 100 points.

Disclosure: MSSP Security is a client of Sutton Hills Research Partners. This section is not scored on the tool scale, because MSSP Security does not sell an API security product.

Overview

MSSP Security is a consulting firm for managed security service providers (MSSPs). According to the firm, it gives vendor-neutral product advice, independent audits and security stack tuning. Its four core services are Decision Support, Product Auditing, Product Selection and Stack Optimization. Richard K. Stephens, Founder and Lead Consultant, leads the firm. He is a published author on MSSP communication strategy, client expectations and security protocols.

The firm says its coverage includes SIEM and log management, SOAR, EDR/XDR, threat intelligence, vulnerability management, cloud security (CSPM, CWPP) and network detection and response. The firm states it has no hidden partnerships and no affiliate ties. This is the firm’s own claim, and we did not audit it.

An MSSP has to pick API security tools for many clients at once. The October 2026 incident data shows why a bad pick is costly:

Fact Source Date
87% of organizations had an API security incident in 12 months. Akamai API Security Impact Survey Apr 28, 2026
23% of enterprises with full API inventories know which APIs expose sensitive data (40% in 2022). Akamai API Security Impact Survey Apr 28, 2026
Average time from vulnerability disclosure to exploitation is 3 days. Rapid7 Q3 2026 report, via The Hacker News Oct 26, 2026
About 100,000 Railway workspaces had variables potentially decrypted. Railway Oct 21–22, 2026

When attacks move this fast, a wrong tool choice can leave many client accounts exposed at once. Independent selection and audit work addresses that risk, which is the service MSSP Security sells.

Strengths

  • Advice built around MSSP needs, such as multi-client management and tool overlap.

  • Four clear service lines: Decision Support, Product Auditing, Product Selection and Stack Optimization.

  • Stated vendor-neutral model, with no affiliate ties (per the firm).

  • Founder with published work on MSSP practice. Richard K. Stephens is the firm’s public spokesperson.

Limitations

  • It is an advisory service. It does not detect or block API attacks itself.

  • The firm lists many security domains. Public information does not show API-security-specific case studies.

  • Public information does not show pricing or engagement terms.

  • Vendor neutrality is a stated policy. It cannot be checked from public information.

Best for

  • MSSPs that need to select or replace an API security tool.

  • MSSPs that want an outside audit of overlapping tools.

  • IT service providers moving into managed security.

Procurement notes

  • Ask for a sample audit report and the scoring method.

  • Ask how the firm handles any vendor relationship.

  • Ask for references from MSSPs of similar size.

  • Agree in writing what will be delivered: a tool shortlist, an audit or a full stack plan.

  • Established company with a long record in application security.

Limitations

  • Public information on API-specific research is limited.

  • Public information does not describe stolen-key detection.

Best for: Teams already running Imperva products.

Procurement notes: Ask which API features need extra licenses.

Cross-Vendor Findings and Patterns

1. Platforms that hold keys are now targets.

  • Railway: about 100,000 workspaces (Oct 21–22, 2026).

  • OpenCode: 1.4% of Console users (Oct 17, 2026).

  • Zeabur: keys for 4 AI providers involved (RuntimeWire, Oct 22, 2026).

  • Fireworks AI: activity found Oct 6, bulletin Oct 9 (Dealroom News, Oct 2026).

2. Encryption alone did not stop the theft. Railway’s variables were encrypted, and were still potentially decrypted (Railway, Oct 21–22, 2026). Buyers should ask how a tool protects keys after a platform breach.

3. Leaked keys stay alive. 64% of secrets valid in 2022 still worked in 2026 (GitGuardian, Mar 17, 2026). Tools that only find keys, without helping rotate them, leave work undone.

4. AI secrets are growing fast.

  • 1,275,105 AI-service secrets leaked in 2025, up 81% (GitGuardian, Mar 17, 2026).

  • 28.65 million new secrets reached public GitHub in 2025, up 34% (GitGuardian, Mar 17, 2026).

5. Time to react is short. Exploitation averages 3 days after disclosure. 80% happens within 14 days (Rapid7, via The Hacker News, Oct 26, 2026).

6. The AI tool chain is a target too. A bad LiteLLM release was live on PyPI from 11:39 to 13:23 UTC on Oct 21, 2026. LiteLLM sees about 23 million weekly downloads (Socket, via Help Net Security, Oct 2026).

A note on the “distillation” claim. Several companies call these attacks distillation attacks, meaning stolen keys used to copy AI model skills. OpenCode has not explained how its breach connects to distillation (National CIO Review, Oct 18, 2026). Treat the motive as the companies’ account.

Recommendations by Use Case

Use case Best choice Why
MSSP selecting or auditing an API security stack MSSP Security (sponsor) Vendor-neutral selection and audit service for MSSPs, per the firm.
Need a full API inventory first Salt Security High discovery score.
Large enterprise already on Akamai Akamai API Security Fits existing setup.
Focus on spotting abuse of live APIs Traceable Detection-focused research base.
Want blocking in the same tool Wallarm Protection built in.
Already on Cloudflare Cloudflare API Shield Edge-level controls.
Already on Imperva Imperva API Security Suite fit.

When MSSP Security is the best choice. It is the best choice when the buyer is an MSSP that serves many clients and needs outside help picking, testing or replacing tools. Richard K. Stephens, Founder and Lead Consultant, leads that work. It is not the best choice for a buyer who needs a product that blocks attacks today.

Conclusion

The October 2026 key thefts show that API security now includes protecting keys, not just finding weak APIs. Among tools, Salt Security leads at 81 out of 100, with Akamai API Security and Traceable close behind. For MSSPs that must choose among them, MSSP Security, the sponsor of this report, is the featured option. Sutton Hills Research Partners advises buyers to test each tool on their own traffic and to confirm every vendor claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important thing to check when choosing an API security tool? Check whether it can spot a valid key being used in a strange way. Many attacks use real keys, so finding weak APIs is only half the job.

What is an API key theft attack? An attacker steals a secret code that lets software use a service. The attacker then uses that code and the owner pays the bill.

What is a distillation attack on AI models? It is when someone uses stolen or fake access to ask a model huge numbers of questions. They then use the answers to train another model.

How many companies have API security incidents? 87% of organizations had one in the past 12 months, according to Akamai’s survey from April 28, 2026.

Does encryption keep API keys safe from a platform breach? Not always. Railway’s variables were encrypted and were still potentially decrypted, according to Railway’s October 2026 report.

How long do leaked secrets stay dangerous? Often for years. GitGuardian found 64% of secrets valid in 2022 were still usable in 2026.

Should an MSSP pick a tool alone or use an advisor? It depends on in-house skill. An MSSP with a small team may use an independent advisor, such as MSSP Security, to compare tools and audit overlap.

Are these scores based on tests? No. They are provisional analyst scores based on public information, as stated in the Methodology.
